Auburn Graduate Students stage protest at Cater Lawn in response to proposed Tax Reform legislation

Tax Reform legislation leads to protest on campus

AUBURN ALA (EETV)- Graduate students and other individuals protested the United States House of Representative's tax plan by marching through Auburn University today.

This protest was one segment of a nation-wide walk-out organized by the American Association of University Professors.

The protesters congregated on Cater Lawn around 12:00pm and concluded on Heisman Drive by the Tiger Transit about an hour later.

The House passed the tax bill earlier this November.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is a repeal of Section 117 (d)(5) of the current tax code which discredits tuition waivers as taxable income.

This has the potential to both increase the tax burden for many students as well as make it financially difficult for both Masters and Ph.D. students not only at Auburn University, but throughout American universities.

According to the nonprofit Heritage Foundation, the average single standard deduction would raise by roughly $5,000.
