Auburn University researchers find mosquito breed that carries Zika virus and other diseases after its 26-year absence

Auburn, Ala. — Auburn University researchers from the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences have found the presence of Aedes aegypti: the breed of mosquito that carries diseases like Zika virus, yellow fever and other flaviviruses. This breed was thought to have been displaced from Alabama and had been absent for 26 years.

Alabama leaders react to landmark SCOTUS religious liberty case

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (EETV)- Several Alabama leaders are reacting positively to a landmark decision on religious liberty released today by the United States Supreme Court in the Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado Civil Rights Commission case. The case centers around a Colorado-based Christian baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple due to personal religious grounds. All five conservative justices and two of the court’s traditionally liberal justices sided with the Christian cake shop owner. The case was seen as a test to whether state anti discrimination laws supersede personal religious liberty rights. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall released a statement saying, “The Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision in Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado Civil Rights Commission is major a victory for the First Amendment right of religious expression in America.” Congressman Mike Rogers, who represents the Auburn area, also released a statement saying, “After years of going down a path that seemed to forget our core values, today marks a turn in the tide as religious liberties prevailed.”

The man behind "Dumps Like a Truck"

Auburn, Ala. -- In 2014, Whitley Dykes posted a picture of a meal cooked by his mother-in-law on his Instagram account with the caption, “Dumps like a truck,”: a picture that would change his life forever. Dykes got the idea to open the food truck with the help of his wife because of what he called, “A lack of places for the many Chinese to get authentic food in Auburn.” The name was inspired by the famous “Thong Song” by the artist, Sisqó, and its line, “dumps like a truck.” Dykes took this line from the song and started a food truck with a purpose.

Where should Auburn students get their textbooks?

Auburn, Ala. -- For most college students, the hardest part of each semester can be finding the right textbook at the best price. Luckily in Auburn, students have several options to ensure that they are getting the best “bang for their buck.” Several students take advantage of Auburn University’s campus bookstore. Others might go to J&M Bookstore or Anders Bookstore downtown. Some use websites like Amazon, smartphone apps or even buy their friends’ used textbooks. “I typically go to the Auburn Bookstore to buy my textbooks, just because it’s more convenient, as I’m already on campus,” said Peter Taliaferro, a senior at Auburn.

Gov. Ivey announces summer program to promote literacy

Attorney General Steve Marshall joins other state officials in supporting new school safety program

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (EETV)- Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has endorsed Gov. Kay Ivey's new school safety proposal. The proposal, called the Alabama Sentry Program, allows specially trained school administrators to be armed in order to prevent potential school shooting treats. “I share Governor Ivey’s concerns that every effort be made to ensure that all Alabama’s schools have the ability to protect our children by quickly responding to threats to their safety,” said Marshall.

Kay Ivey announced in a press conference Wednesday, May 30, that she will be beginning the Alabama Sentry Program, which will provide additional security precautions to schools that lack a School Resource Officer (SRO). The Alabama Sentry Program allows volunteer administrators in schools without School Resource Officers to keep a firearm on campus in a secure location in case of an active shooter situation.

The midterm election, which usually has low voter turnout, is traditionally seen as a referendum on the party that controls the White House. Much of the discussion over the past few months has been whether or not Democrats will muster enough support to retake the House of Representatives, a branch of government they have not controlled since 2010. Given the large number of Democratic incumbents up for reelection in traditionally Republican states, many pundits see little chance of Democrats regaining control of the Senate. Recent polls suggest that generic support for Republican candidates has grown.
