Alleged Opelika Police impersonator story found to be made up by victim

Opelika Police say they found evidence that the story was false and the teenage victim later admitted to lying.

OPELIKA, Ala. (EETV) - A week after Opelika Police first released information regarding a police impersonator, and days after releasing a sketch of the alleged perpetrator, that report has turned out to be false.

Opelika Police Department said in a press release Friday afternoon that the alleged report of a police impersonator sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Opelika was all made up.

Police used surveillance video from multiple sources to determine that the girl lied about the story. She recanted her story and admitted to lying. The investigation will remain ongoing, with the focus shifting to the false reporting of an incident.

Criminal charges for the teenager have not yet been determined. Since the victim is a juvenile, police will not comment further on the status of the investigation.
