Auburn, Ala. – Auburn University plays an important role in shaping the city of Auburn, a partnership that Mayor Ron Anders believes is the strongest university-city relationship in the country.
Mayor Anders spoke at a meeting hosted by the Auburn College Republican group on Thursday evening. The mayor discussed how the university shapes his responsibilities and contributes to the broader Auburn community. Anders, an Auburn graduate and lifelong resident of the city for more than 60 years, emphasized that the strong cooperation between the city and the university is both intentional and essential to Auburn’s continued growth.
Anders mentioned several shared projects and facilities as examples of this partnership, including the shared police department and the Yarbrough Tennis Center. He also highlighted the city’s financial contributions to university-related projects, including spending $1.5 million toward the Gogue Performing Arts Center and another $5 million toward an amphitheater. He also mentioned that the city and the university are working to build a new campus hospital.
In addition to shared facilities, Anders stressed the importance of strong and frequent communication between city and university leadership. He regularly meets with Auburn University President Dr. Christopher Roberts to discuss future projects and their potential effects on the community. Anders also participates in monthly breakfasts with the University's Student Government Association, where student leaders can share their ideas with the mayor. A recent example is the installation of a pedestrian traffic light at the intersection of the concourse and Magnolia Avenue, funded equally by the city and the university.
The mayor also praised Auburn’s extensive network of non-profit organizations and charities, many of which are student-led and funded by university students. Anders believes student involvement at the university makes Auburn unique compared to other cities in Alabama.
While collaboration with the university remains central to his role, Anders specifically emphasized that his primary responsibility as mayor is to protect Auburn residents. He described public safety as a major priority and highlighted future investments in that area.
Auburn College Republicans President and sophomore Keener Linder hosted the meeting in Lowder Hall, giving university students a chance to hear directly from their mayor. Anders strongly encourages students to become actively involved in the larger community, reinforcing his belief that the university and the city are closely interconnected.
