AUBURN, Ala. — Last Saturday, Auburn won a close game against Baylor in a nail-biting thriller. The game left plenty of questions about what’s to come this season for the Tigers. Auburn will look to build on that performance this week against Southern Miss in its home opener.
Alex Golesh spoke to the media Wednesday at a press conference about the team’s early struggles and how it will be better prepared for the upcoming week. Questions came in early about whether he thought Auburn could truly improve after its subpar performance.
“I think really good football teams get better as it goes. If we’re gonna be a really good football team, you truly have to continue to get better,” Golesh said.
Quarterback Byrum Brown had an underwhelming Auburn debut with 250 yards and three turnovers. Golesh was very optimistic about Brown’s start and progression heading into this week.
“You want the passing unit to be on time. You certainly do,” Golesh said. “You saw early in the game we tried to get into a rhythm. It was more quick game, like perimeter stuff, to get him in a groove.”
When asked about the injury status of Da'Shawn Womack and Chris Murray for Saturday’s game, Golesh was positive about the depth chart heading into the week.
"I think Womack is still day-to-day. My hope is he can go Saturday. He’s like, itching out there,” Golesh said. "C.K. Murray, same deal, day-to-day. The hope is he can go. Outside of that, we're good to go."
Golesh also gave his thoughts on Southern Miss ahead of Saturday’s game, explaining that the Golden Eagles will be a good challenge for Auburn in its first home game.
“Southern Miss, another unique challenge just from a coaching staff standpoint,” Golesh said. “They are explosive at running back. Play really hard up front.”
The Tigers take on Southern Miss Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT on SEC Network. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers bounce back against Southern Miss in their home opener.
