Auburn Baseball loses second straight home Super Regional to end season

Auburn Baseball lost its second straight home Super Regional Saturday, 5-3, as the Tigers gave up five straight runs to Ole Miss. Despite eight strikeouts and 10 forced groundouts, Auburn was unable to stop Ole Miss’ long-ball hitting, with the Rebels driving two home runs on Saturday en route to Omaha.

After three scoreless innings and only three baserunners left stranded for Auburn, the Tigers struck first in the top of the fourth. Chris Rembert reached on a fielder's choice, and was later advanced to third via a single from Ethin Bingaman. Just a couple of pitches later, Bub Terrell drove in both with an RBI single into the outfield to give Auburn a 2-0 lead.

That RBI single was the last of Auburn’s scoring until freshman Taylor Belza’s RBI sac fly in the ninth, as Auburn continued its weekend of lackluster hitting with runners on base. The Tigers finished the game hitting a paltry 3 for 15 with runners on base, and 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. Auburn finished the weekend 9 for 37 with runners on and 3 for 19 with runners in scoring position, resulting in the Tigers' lowest two-game scoring output since the middle of May.

Alex Petrovic got the ball to try to extend Auburn's campaign, taking the mound for his biggest start of the season. With the first 10 batters put down in succession and five scoreless innings, it looked like Petrovic could carry the slow Auburn offense to a win-or-go-home Game 3 of the Super Regional.

However, for the second day in a row, the Rebels' Judd Utermark had something to say. Utermark rocked a 2-run double off Petrovic in the sixth, ending the starter's outing. From then on, it was almost complete domination for the Rebels. After a scoreless 7th, Ole Miss tacked on its third, fourth, and fifth runs in the eighth, starting with a 2-run shot by Will Furniss to go up 4-2.  Just three pitches later, Tristan Bissetta hit a solo moonshot to blow the game wide open and give Ole Miss their fifth straight run of the game.

That 5-2 lead would hold, sending Ole Miss to the College World Series for the first time since 2022 After the game, Auburn head coach Butch Thompson spoke about both Auburn's strong start to the game and the Rebles' subsequent comeback.

“Yeah, just I love the rhythm of the game as it got started with Alex out there, and found a way to negotiate a couple of runs and got a lead, never could build on it. And to their credit, you know, I want Alex and Jackson on that mound for us today, and they really worked through us, now that it's over, you know,” Thompson said. “A couple of days in a row, they just did a little bit more offensively, and we couldn't really catch a rhythm with that.”

Auburn would later get two runners on base in the ninth, but a groundout to third by Mason McCraine ended both the game and Auburn's bid for Omaha. With the season over for the Tigers, Thompson and the rest of the Tigers must refocus and look forward to next season.

“Yeah, keeping them [the young players] in mind first. If you call it a nucleus, or whatever you want to call it, we'll start meeting with guys tomorrow afternoon, end of Monday. So, about the end of Monday, we'll be through that,” Coach Thompson said. “We've already started having a few guys in, but the nucleus is first."

With young players like 2025 regional MVP Bub Terrell and 2026 Regional MVP Chase Fralick hopeful to return to the Plains, the Tigers look primed for more success next year.
