Opelika shooting suspect turns himself in

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) – Opelika Police say Zy'Reon James, the suspect in the shooting of a 16-year-old, turned himself in on Sunday, Sept. 28 and now faces a first-degree assault charge.

The altercation occurred on Aug. 30 at approximately 11:54 p.m. at the 3500 block of Dale Avenue. Upon arrival at the scene, Opelika Police located a 16-year-old and 20-year-old James both suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police say the shooting happened during an altercation involving multiple individuals. James was determined to have allegedly shot the 16-year-old.

The Opelika Police Department sent out a press release on Sept. 24 asking for the public’s assistance in locating the suspect.

“We do that to encourage suspects to turn themselves in,” said Allison Duke, the Community Relations Administrator for the Opelika Police Department.

When asked for further comments on the situation, Duke only thanked the community for sharing the information in last Wednesday’s press release.
