AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - On Friday, Sept. 5 the International Student Organization will hold a Squid Games Social Hour from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Melton Student Center Suite 2022. Admission is free for all students.
This event aims to provide a lens into Korean culture using the Netflix thriller series, "Squid Game" as an entry point. Auburn University Assistant Professor in World Languages, Dr. Hyongrae Kim, will speak on the aspects of Korean culture present in the show as guests are encouraged to try authentic Korean cuisine.
"Squid Game" presents a modern twist on traditional Korean culture through the lens of South Korea’s growing capitalist society. Despite the show’s references to popular Korean Children’s games, the show examines some of the harsher realities of South Korean society. The series highlights the drastic measures the impoverished and debt-ridden are willing to take. Despite participation in the brutal games being voluntary, many of the contestants feel compelled by social pressures to risk their lives for money and status.
The International Student Organization is hosting this event and many others in an attempt to foster cultural exchange and adaptation between foreign and local students.
