Auburn softball defeated UAB by nine runs

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - Auburn secured a 9-0 victory over UAB in this week’s midweek matchup at home. With the threat of looming weather on Wednesday, Auburn decided to move their game up one day.

Auburn didn’t need the extra day to prepare as they came out with strong offense scoring nine runs on seven hits, while the pitching duo Maddie Penta and Shelby Lowe shutdown UAB with seven combined strikeouts.

“We got off to a nice start,” said head coach Mickey Dean. “We continued to build off that. Our pitchers worked ahead. We averaged 15 pitches an inning, which is exactly where we want to be. We did a nice job.”

In the bottom of the first, Anna Wohlers started off the inning with a ground out to second base. UAB’s starter AJ Kramer struggled to find the strike zone as she walked the next three batters.

After a pitching change, Icess Tresvik hit a single to right center field that drove in two runs. Tresvik was aggressive on base and wasted no time stealing second.

With two runners in scoring position, Mariah Penta doubled to left, driving in another two runs for the Tigers.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Wohlers scored from third after Tresvik hit into a fielder’s choice, adding on to the Tiger’s lead.

In the bottom of the third with two runners on, Wohlers found a hole on the right side for an RBI single. Then after a hit by pitch that once again left the bases loaded, Nelia Peralta came through with a single to left, driving in another two runs.

The Tigers cemented their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Axe Milanowski scored on a fly out hit by Riley McNemar.

The lady Blazers struggled to put the ball in play and move runners around the bases throughout the game. UAB’s pitching allowed six walks and two hit by pitch that led to six unanswered runs.

This win extends Auburn's win streak against UAB to 14 games.

The Tigers will travel to Baton Rouge this weekend for a three game SEC matchup against LSU. The first game is set to start at 6:00 p.m. CT on Friday, April 12th.
