Suni Lee named Sportswoman of the Year by the Women's Sports Foundation

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) – Auburn gymnast Suni Lee added more hardware to her collection this week after the Olympic gold medalist was named the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Individual Sportswoman of the Year at its Annual Salute to Women in Sports event.

The winner was crowned as a result of a public vote and finalists for the award were selected based on their performances from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022.

In that timeframe, Lee traveled to Tokyo and competed in her first Olympic Games, bringing home three medals for Team USA including the gold medal in all-around.

After her performance on the world stage, Lee turned her attention to the collegiate landscape. In her first season with the Tigers, Lee led the team to the final four, the best finish for an Auburn gymnastics team in school history.

In her first collegiate season Lee took home the NCAA title in balance beam while she finished second in the all-around category. The 19-year-old won the SEC bars title en route to being named SEC Freshman of the Year.

The Women's Sports Foundation advocates for equality in athletics and pushes to get more girls and women involved in sports through research, funding and other programs.
