Opelika man charged with assault following shooting that left one injured and standoff with police

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - An Opelika man is facing assault charges following a shooting that left one man injured and standoff with police officials early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 1:36 a.m., the Opelika Police Department received calls of shots fired in the 2200 Block of Star Street. Upon arrival, officers located Charles Mitchell Wesson, 52, barricaded in a shed located on the property.

During this time, officers were dispatched to Whataburger, responding to male suffering from an apparent gunshot

wound. After investigation, it was determined that an altercation occurred in the 2200 Block of Star Street, where the victim was shot.

The victim was transported to East Alabama Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Members of the Lee County SWAT Team were deployed to the location and safely took the Wesson into custody.
