Freshman Justin Powell Leads Auburn to Win Over Memphis

AUBURN, Ala (EETV) - Auburn Freshman Point Guard Justin Powell showed his skills in Saturday Night’s 74-71 win over Memphis in the Holiday Hoopsgiving showcase in Atlanta. Powell totaled 26 points, seven rebounds and shot 4-of-6 from behind the arc.

Powell started off strong, scoring the first 11 points for the Tigers. Powell soon hit a slump in the first half and ended the half with 11 points.

The freshman has shown himself to be a big asset for the Tigers just five games into his career at Auburn. He shot 9-of-13 on the night and his second-half effort secured the win for Auburn.

Saturday’s game was Powell’s second game in a row with a 20-point performance and it was his second start for the Tigers.

Other notable performances from the Tigers came from Allen Flanigan and Jaylin Williams. Flanigan had 16 points and four assists while Williams helped out the Tigers with eight rebounds.

For Memphis, D.J. Jeffries led the pack with 16 points and seven rebounds with Boogie Ellis and Alex Lomax close behind with 10 points each.

While both team’s offense was rolling all game, Memphis’s defense caused major issues for Auburn. The Tigers totaled 17 turnovers, with Powell and Guard Tyrell Jones combining for 10 of the 17.

Both teams struggled shooting free throws, with Auburn making 14-26 and Memphis making 11-23. Just two players between both teams made all their free throws; Jones and Babatunde Akingbola.

The win advances Auburn to 3-2 on the season and the Tigers will be back in action Tuesday, Dec. 15 where they will take on Texas Southern from Auburn Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT and the game can be found on SEC Network+.
