Auburn Athletics Fires Gus Malzahn

AUBURN, Ala (EETV) - Auburn Athletics announced Sunday afternoon that football Head Coach Gus Malzahn will no longer lead the program. Defensive Coordinator Kevin Steele will step up as interim head coach in the meantime.

During his eight years at Auburn, Malzahn ended with a 68-35 record with a 39-27 record in the South Eastern Conference. Under his leadership, he led the Tigers to an SEC Championship and a BCS National Championship appearance, as well as an SEC West title in 2017.

Allen Greene, Director of Auburn Athletics, recommended the change to Auburn President Jay Gouge and Gouge accepted.

“After evaluating the state of the Auburn football program, we’ve decided that it was time to make a change in leadership,” Green said. “We appreciate everything that Gus did for the program over the last eight seasons. We will begin a search immediately for a coach that can help the Auburn program consistently compete at the highest level.”

Malzahn will be paid the remainder of his contract and a search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
