Auburn Women Start Season at Blessings Collegiate

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - After seven months, the Auburn women’s golf team will return at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Last March, their season was canceled due to COVID-19. There were no SEC or NCAA championships. As the Tigers train for the 2020-21 season, last season's events add new gratitude to this upcoming season.

“It’s super special,” says junior Mychael O’Berry. "We’re all excited. I felt like we were kind of on a good roll last year in the spring and obviously for it to get cut short—everybody is in the same boat—but that just gives us even more motivation and drive.”

“We’ve gone through adversity,” head coach Melissa Luellen said. “Things were really ramping up and we were playing well and so excited to finish strong, and then it got taken away from us and everybody else.

"We’ve had a few challenges along the way just getting here. So just the fact that we’re headed to Arkansas is very exciting. The girls have been playing a lot, we’ve been qualifying a lot. We’re excited to go.”

The Blessings Collegiate Invitational will feature all 14 teams in the Southeastern Conference. The three-day event is set to begin Monday.

From the 2018-19 team, four out of the five players will be competing in the match, including O’Berry, Kaleigh Telfer, Julie McCarthy and Brooke Sansom. Additionally, freshman Ashely-Sinclair Curtis will debut in her first collegiate event.

The Auburn Tigers tee off Monday at 11:46 a.m. CT and the Golf Channel will provide live coverage.
