Gov. Kay Ivey announces new solar power plant, providing more jobs

Montgomery, Ala. -- Gov. Kay Ivey announced on Wednesday, June 27, that LG Electronics has made plans to invest $28 million in pursuit of creating a world-class solar module assembly plant in Huntsville, Alabama, which will create 160 new jobs.

LG, a leading provider of residential solar panels in the U.S., has plans to create a new factory, consisting of two production lines, which will be at a pre-existing building on their company's 48-acre Huntsville campus. The company has operated from this spot for several years. The new jobs that come with this project will increase LG's employment by 60 percent.

“LG has a long history as a leading corporate citizen in Alabama. Now, LG is launching our state’s first solar manufacturing plant, which represents a major milestone both for Alabama and for the company,” said Gov. Ivey.

By early 2019, this new factory is expected to annually create 500 megawatts of LG's N-type solar panels. This plant will allow LG to better serve their customers. The state of Alabama was chosen after a long period of research, in competition with several other states.

“LG is a world-class company, and its decision represents a powerful endorsement of Alabama’s advantages and its workforce,” said Greg Canfield, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce.

LG has a longstanding relationship with the state, with its Huntsville plant being the home of LG's service division. This plant has expanded over the years to supplement LG's growing presence in the U.S.

“LG chose Huntsville as the place to do business in the U.S. more than 30 years ago, and they’ve chosen Huntsville again as a place to prosper with the new solar module plant," said Mayor Tommy Battle.
