Presidential Candidate Profile: Mike O'Key

Auburn, Ala.(EETV)- Being the first out of his family to go to college, Mike O'Key, Junior from Fayetteville, NC, currently double majoring in Public Administration and Environmental Design, says that it was difficult figuring out college at first but with the help of people he surrounded himself with he was able to gain the tools necessary to succeed in college.

“Being able to figure out myself around a people that I have had the opportunity to [work] with is an amazing experience.”

O'Key has been involved in Student Government Association (SGA) Cabinet, Committee Chair for Inclusion and Diversity, Executive Director for Welcome Week, and volunteer with the Lee County Development Center.

"I’m fortunate to have had a series of experiences throughout my life that have molded me into the person I am today, and that’s the person that would really fight for the student body."

The focus of his campaign is centered around a slogan called "I'm Like Mike." Saying that students should feel they have a candidate that they feel comfortable talking to about their concerns.

"I want students to feel 100% comfortable talking to or reaching out to [me], I want people to know that they have an advocate on campus."

O’Key believes that he knows what the administration and student side are looking for in regards to the enhancement of the Auburn community. He feels that he has the experience to bridge the gap between both sides.

“Students are emotion driven and they have things that they are passionate about and that’s what fuels their interest, administration is data driven, they need to know that it works, that it will be successful, that there are presidents out there, I know what both sides are looking for and I can help bridge that gap.”

If elected, O’Key wants to make it very clear from the start what we value as a university. He also wants to push more students at Auburn University to take a stance on things that we don’t agree with or even agree with. He wants students to not be afraid of what judgements might happen after sharing your viewpoint.

"As a family I think it is important that we take a stance as student leaders to say that we will not allow sexual assault on our campus, take a stance to say that everyone needs to be respected.”
