Tigers Crush the competition in Chapel Hill

The Auburn Tigers Women's golf team dominated the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in their return to action over the weekend. The Tigers were the only team that finished under par, with a cumulative score of 5-under, led by the individual winner, Auburn junior Anna Davis.

Davis played exceptionally throughout every round, shooting 69-67-67 across the weekend to win at 7-under, three strokes in front of Emily Mathews from Virginia Tech. Davis was also awarded the SEC Player of the Week honor.

Sophomores Balma Dávalos and Anne Fernandez both backed up Davis with T-4 finishes, shooting 2-under through the three rounds. This is yet another high finish for Dávalos, her third consecutive top 5 this fall. Sophomore Molly Brown Davidson finished at 6-over, good enough for 17th, and freshman Charlotte Cantonis rounded out the team with a 32nd-place finish. Longtime Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen was very pleased after the round.

"So happy for this team,” Luellen said. “The depth and competitiveness of our squad has been preparing us for these moments. Really windy today and tough hole locations, which makes me even more proud. We led the field in birdies, bogey avoidance, par-3 scoring, par-4 scoring and par-5 scoring. That is dominating!"

The UNC Finley GC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, proved to be a tough test, but Auburn was the only team that stood up to the challenge. Across the three days, the scoring average was 74.22, with only two holes playing under par.

Coming into the event, the Tigers were ranked No. 16 in the country. After adding another team victory in the fall, the team will certainly rise in the rankings, proving they will be a force to be reckoned with come springtime.

The Tigers will look to continue their excellent play in their final fall event at the Nanai Invitational in Hawaii from Oct. 27-29.
