Miss Homecoming winner continues to inspire students

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - On September 16th, Auburn took to the Jordan-Hare Stadium during halftime to announce this year’s 2023 Miss Homecoming winner, Ellie Korotky.

Korotky is a senior at Auburn University from Huntsville, Alabama who has been an avid Auburn fan since day one. She said she was honored to be this year’s Miss Homecoming.

“I remember attending the Auburn Homecoming game in 2008 and my dad pinning a little corsage on my Auburn cheer outfit,” said Korotky. “Little did we know that he would escort me on the field 15 years later, in my Tiger Paws Dance Team uniform! It was a sweet full circle moment.”

Korotky’s motto, "Encourage with Ellie" is rooted in her devotion to advocating for those with Down syndrome. At a young age, her cousin, Eleanor, was born with Down syndrome, and she inspired Korotky to take the initiative to bring her support to Auburn’s campus.

She focuses on three of Down syndrome Alabama’s core values – awareness, acceptance, and advocacy. The first value, awareness, focuses on continuing to educate students on what it is and how it affects those who are born with Down syndrome. The second value, acceptance encourages students to understand that though it is an intellectual disease, people with Down syndrome can live fulfilling, exciting lives alongside other students.

“Lastly, awareness and acceptance can only happen if we advocate for our friends with Down syndrome,” said Korotky. “Whether we advocate for peer support, campus recognition, or connecting with those with Down syndrome, every little bit will make a big difference. Even though campaign week is over, I will continue advocating for my friends with Down syndrome!”

Following Korotky’s winning of Miss Homecoming, she strives to continue advocating for support and awareness for those with Down syndrome.

“Whether this is meeting students on the concourse or organizing a Buddy Walk, I know that Miss Homecoming can make a difference on campus more than just campaign week,” said Korotky.

Korotky's growing platform continues to be a way for Korotky's to inspire students, especially with Down syndrome awareness month around the corner.

“I will continue using this platform to advocate for individuals with Down syndrome,” said Korotky. “October is Down syndrome awareness month, and I am excited to participate in many celebrations during the month. I encourage the student body and Auburn community to join me!"
