Kharyssa Richardson named SEC Freshman of the Week

AUBURN, Ala.(EETV) - Auburn women’s basketball player Kharyssa Richardson was named SEC Freshman of the Week, the office conference announced on Tuesday morning.

This is the first time in her collegiate career that she has earned a weekly honor and it is the second of the season for Auburn; Sydney Shaw was titled Freshman of the Week succeeding non-conference play.

The 6’2" forward was a critical piece in the Tigers' win over Florida on Monday night. She had career high game, ending the night with 15 points and 16 rebounds, marking her first collegiate double-double. In Thursday’s victory over Kentucky, Richardson showed a 7 point, 5 rebound performance.

She concludes the week with an average of 11.0 points and 10.5 rebounds.

The Douglasville, Georgia native's 15 point, 16 rebound night was the first 15-15 effort from an Auburn player since Unique Thompson’s performance multiple times during the 2020-21 season. However, Richardson is the first Auburn freshman to conquer that feat since Lauretta Freeman had 16 points and 20 rebounds on Jan. 27, 1990 vs. Tuskegee.

The Tigers will be back in Neville Arena on Sunday, Feb. 5, to take on Arkansas. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CT.
