Alabama leaders react to landmark SCOTUS religious liberty case

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (EETV)- Several Alabama leaders are reacting positively to a landmark decision on religious liberty released today by the United States Supreme Court in the Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado Civil Rights Commission case.

The case centers around a Colorado-based Christian baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple due to personal religious grounds.

All five conservative justices and two of the court’s traditionally liberal justices sided with the Christian cake shop owner.

The case was seen as a test to whether state anti discrimination laws supersede personal religious liberty rights.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall released a statement saying, “The Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision in Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado Civil Rights Commission is major a victory for the First Amendment right of religious expression in America.”

Congressman Mike Rogers, who represents the Auburn area, also released a statement saying, “After years of going down a path that seemed to forget our core values, today marks a turn in the tide as religious liberties prevailed.”
