New emergency care center to be built in Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - A new emergency-care center in Auburn is in the works through East Alabama Medical Center, Laura Grill, the future CEO of the hospital said Tuesday.

According to Grill, the new center will be "a free-standing emergency department, detached and in a separate location, but sill affiliated with the hospital."

In an age of overcrowding and long waits at hospitals across the country, hospitals are looking for innovative ways to care for even more patients. This separate emergency center would be one of those ways.

The emergency center is still very much in discussion stages but the planning board is looking at having it located in Auburn.

Another facility the hospital has plans for is the $40 million cancer center near the main hospital campus in Opelika. Building should begin in January with the facility opening in summer 2019. That center will feature a wig boutique, a pharmacy, and a chapel, as well as doubling the size of operations of the current cancer center.
