Auburn Alumnus Finds Safe in Floor While Remodeling Home

AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - Auburn University alumnus, Matt Richardson, dug up something interesting while remodeling his home in Winter Park, Florida.

Richardson, who graduated from Auburn in 1991 with a degree in Marketing, was remodeling his bathroom after it sustained serious damage from Hurricane Irma in September, 2017. When he tore up the floor under the bathtub, Richardson uncovered a safe in the ground.

On January 12, 2018, Richardson shared photos on Twitter of his discovery. He tweeted, “LOOK what I found while remodeling my home!?!? (@MATTBRICHARDSON)”

Richardson told Eagle Eye that he has not opened the safe yet, but he found out that it was made in California and likely dates back to the 1960s. Richardson said that he has contacted a few safe-smiths, and that his friends have even offered to “blow torch it open,” but he turned down their offers because he doesn’t want to damage whatever may be inside the safe.

“If there’s anything paper in there, maybe like original stock, we don’t want to burn that up,” Richardson shared. “There could be an old gun stored in there, there could be coins. Really it could be anything…”

Richardson said if there’s one thing he would want to find, “gold or silver coins would be really cool… if there’s anything in there at all it would be really cool.”
