Auburn, Ala. (EETV) - Auburn Defensive Coordinator Kevin Steele has been nominated for the Broyles Award given to college football's top assistant coach.

Steele is one of the 56 nominated for this award.

Steele's defensive unit takes the spot at No. 3 in the SEC in scoring defense (16.9) and No. 4 in total defense (103.2 yards).

Auburn is ranked ninth in scoring nationally and No. 14 in total defense.  Steele is one of only eight nominees in the SEC.

Gus Malzahn, Auburn head coach, won the Broyles award in 2010 when he held the position of Auburn's offensive coordinator.

Being the first time in Broyles Award's 22-year history, the selection process includes a committee from the Football Writers Association of America.

From the nominees, fifteen semi-finalists will be chosen and five finalists will travel to Little Rock, Arkansas on Dec. 5 for the announcement of the Broyles Award winner.
